Public International Law and Sanctions
Zaiwalla & Co is a pioneer in the law in successfully challenging international sanctions imposed on other countries. For example, the firm acted, and continues to act, for Bank Mellat in the case of Bank Mellat v HM Treasury which featured in The Lawyer's Top 20 global disputes being litigated in the English Courts 2015. In October 2015 a well-publicised High Court ruling found that the Bank’s damages claim of US$ 4billion against the United Kingdom can proceed. Using innovative litigation, lawyers at Zaiwalla & Co have successfully fought to have sanctions against individuals and entities struck out where there has been no clear evidence of wrongdoing. From the UK Courts to the Supreme and European Courts, our lawyers have acted in cutting edge legal actions involving the complex restrictions on international trade for both individuals and companies.
Our clients trust us to fight on their behalf for their rights and that trust has been amply vindicated. One of the very few City law firms to take on this work, let alone to champion it, Zaiwalla & Co leads the way in this ground breaking area of legal work. The world’s leading oil producer Rosneft is a client and we worked with their existing legal team to advise on the Company’s litigation strategy in the matter of OJSC Rosneft Oil Company v Her Majesty’s Treasury - another of the Lawyer’s Top 20 Cases of 2015. The firm now has a five-year accreditation to Rosneft’s legal panel.
“I trust Zaiwalla & Co to fight my corner. They are creative in their approach and have managed to help us win cases I really didn’t expect to win.”
